What I Wish I Knew When I Started My Wellness Journey

Embarking on a wellness journey is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Looking back, there are so many things I wish I had known when I first set out to improve my health and well-being. If I could sit down with my younger self, these are the lessons I would share—lessons that could have saved me time, frustration, and unnecessary detours.


1. Progress, Not Perfection, is the Goal


When I started, I thought I needed to follow the perfect diet, the perfect workout routine, and the perfect schedule. But perfection is an illusion, and striving for it only leads to burnout. Wellness isn’t about doing everything right 100% of the time—it’s about making consistent progress, even if it’s just one small step at a time.


Now, I focus on balance instead of perfection. Some days I nail it, and some days I don’t, but I’ve learned to be kind to myself and keep moving forward.


2. Small Changes Add Up


I used to think that big transformations required dramatic changes. But over time, I realized that small, sustainable changes make the biggest impact. Simple habits like drinking more water, walking an extra 10 minutes a day, or adding vegetables to every meal can create a ripple effect that leads to significant results.


Wellness isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Focus on the little things you can do today, and trust that they’ll compound over time.


3. Food is Not the Enemy


Early in my journey, I fell into the trap of viewing food as something to fear or avoid. I counted every calorie, labeled foods as “good” or “bad,” and felt guilty whenever I indulged. What I didn’t understand was that food is fuel—and also a source of joy, connection, and culture.


Learning to listen to my body, honor my hunger, and enjoy all foods in moderation was a game-changer. Now, I see food as a tool to nourish my body and soul, not something to control or obsess over.


4. Rest is Just as Important as Movement


In my eagerness to get fit, I over exercised and undervalued the power of rest. I didn’t realize that rest days are when your body recovers, repairs, and grows stronger. Overworking myself led to exhaustion and injuries that could have been avoided.


Now, I embrace rest as a vital part of my wellness routine. Whether it’s a full day off, gentle yoga, or just a good night’s sleep, rest is where the magic happens.


5. Mental Health is Part of Wellness


I used to think wellness was all about physical health—what I ate, how much I exercised, and how I looked. But true wellness includes mental health too. Managing stress, setting boundaries, and finding ways to support my emotional well-being have been just as important as eating well and staying active.


Journaling, meditating, and surrounding myself with positive influences have all helped me feel more balanced and resilient. Wellness starts from the inside out.


6. It’s Okay to Ask for Help


In the beginning, I felt like I had to figure everything out on my own. But there’s no shame in seeking support, whether it’s from a nutritionist, a personal trainer, or a trusted friend. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength and self-awareness.


Sometimes, just having someone to guide or encourage you can make all the difference.


7. Your Journey is Unique


Comparing myself to others was one of the biggest obstacles in my wellness journey. Social media and fitness culture made me feel like I wasn’t doing enough or progressing fast enough.


What I’ve learned is that everyone’s journey is different. What works for one person might not work for another, and that’s okay. The key is finding what works for you—your body, your goals, and your lifestyle.
